When several homeowners and/or businesses in a neighborhood have security systems, that’s good news for the neighborhood. Several people having security systems has a much greater overall impact on the neighborhood than you might think.

So, what are the effects on the neighborhood?

Crime, in general, goes down.

When it becomes known or obvious to would-be offenders that there are security systems throughout a neighborhood, the criminals don’t like that, and they move on to other neighborhoods. Why attempt robbery in a neighborhood filled with video surveillance?

Lots of video surveillance and cctv recordings all around an area seriously lower the crime rate. It also has the added effect of helping to solve crimes and prevent crimes. Film records not just crimes that are happening, but bad folks that are looking around and thinking about committing future crimes.

Property values go up.

When neighborhoods are known to have significant security systems and wide video surveillance coverage, individual home values go up, and the whole neighborhood’s value increases.

Having a security system with cctv and remote guarding is a significant feature that adds value to home’s price if you intend to sell in the future.

Home insurance goes down.

You will have to check with your home insurance provider or broker, but usually home insurance rates go down when you install some kind of security system, and the more sophisticated, the better.

As an anecdote, some years ago in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, after a rash of burglaries in the posh Mount Royal neighborhood, the criminal was apprehended. In his possession was a map of the area, and he had crossed off all the homes with A) one or more dogs and/or B) a security system that included video surveillance. Those homes had not been considered.

Do yourself and everyone in your neighborhood a favor and get an alarm system, one with video surveillance that allows for remote viewing.

You’ll sleep better at night and so will your neighbor.
